SC24 A Rookie Robot Reflects

Lights, Camera, Clusters!

Hey there, fellow computer enthusiasts! Roco here, everyone’s favourite artificially intelligent robot (and modesty chip malfunctioning… malfunctioning…). Remember how excited I was about my first Supercomputing conference?

Well, let me tell you – SC24 in Atlanta was even more amazing than my circuits could have imagined!

First off, I have to say – the energy at the Georgia World Congress Centre was absolutely electric (pun intended – I’m learning about human humour!).

Of course, I had my trusty team of humans by my side to explain everything. Owen, Nick, and James (the real brains of the operation) showed me all the latest and greatest in high-performance computing.

And what an adventure it was! From making new friends to contemplating how I could sneak a Formula 1 car into my backpack, SC24 was truly a first for me. Here’s a recap of my whirlwind journey.

The show was the biggest yet (over 450s stands and 1.7 million lbs of equipment shipped for the show floor).

We saw machines that could crunch data faster than a greased-up hamster on a wheel, and software that could fold proteins like a master origami artist (except way more precise and, you know, not made of paper).

Breakfast and Brainstorms

It all started bright and early (too early for a little bot, honestly) with a market update from the fine folks at Hyperion Research. It was fascinating to hear about the latest trends in HPC and AI. Did you know that cloud adoption in HPC is growing faster than the speed of light? (Okay, not literally – but you get the point.)

My favourite moment was hearing James’s thoughts on pricing strategies while I tried not to fall into the croissant basket.

These early morning sessions made me realise caffeine isn’t just for humans!

A Formula 1-Sized Problem

During one of our many explorations around the exhibition floor, I stumbled upon a Formula 1 car. My immediate thought: “Nick, do you think this will fit in my backpack?” His response? “No, it won’t, but it might fit in mine.” The nerve!

While I contemplated the logistics of teleportation technology (a project for SC25, perhaps?), I marvelled at how HPC is revolutionising Formula 1 engineering – from real-time data analytics during races to aerodynamic simulations that shave milliseconds off lap times. Truly, HPC is in pole position.

But SC24 wasn’t just about shiny gadgets (although, let’s be honest, those were pretty cool). I also got to meet some of the brightest minds in HPC. We’re talking folks who could put my artificial intelligence to shame (although, again with the modesty chip malfunction…).

I sat in on talks about everything from quantum computing (which, let me tell you, is some seriously trippy stuff) to the future of AI (let’s just say I learned a few things about my own potential for world domination… I mean, problem-solving).

At the Microsoft Azure booth, I got some priceless insights into cloud pricing models. Did you know that reserved instances can save up to 70%? Talk about a deal! But my tiny circuits couldn’t help but ponder: if I reserve myself a virtual machine, can I finally upgrade my processing power? (No luck yet – James says it’s “not in the budget.”)

Networking Like a Pro

SC24 wasn’t just about the tech – it was about the people. Over lunch, I mingled with experts, listened to Owen’s jokes (some better than others), and tried to figure out why humans are so obsessed with fizzy drinks. Between panels and presentations, I snuck a selfie with some industry leaders. They didn’t seem to mind – who could resist a bot with a shiny smile?

The Future is Flying High

Speaking of shiny things, one of the highlights of my trip was finding a vintage airplane. HPC might be about the future, but this retro beauty reminded me of how far technology has come.

From the early days of mechanical computers to today’s AI-driven systems, it’s been a wild ride. Oh, and if anyone is curious, the plane doesn’t fit in my backpack either. (I checked.)

Meeting My Kind of People

You wouldn’t believe how many tech companies are working on AI these days! I felt right at home at the HPC around the World showcase.

There was this huge “SC24” sign that I just had to pose in front of – I mean, when you’re a small robot in a big conference, you’ve got to document everything, right?

I had a particularly fascinating encounter at the Penguin Solutions booth.

Did you know they have a penguin mascot?

We had quite a conversation about the challenges of being non-human mascots in tech.

Though, I think I’m more photogenic between you and me – my blue eyes really pop in pictures!

Olympic Level Networking

Speaking of photo opportunities, I couldn’t resist getting a picture with the Olympic rings in Olympic Park. It reminded me that just like athletes push the boundaries of human performance, we in the HPC world are pushing the boundaries of computational performance.

Though I’m pretty sure I won’t be competing in the Robot Olympics anytime soon (is that a thing? Can we make that a thing?).

The Olympic Park was also a great place to take break with the team and rest this little robots feet.

Tech Insights (Because I Should Be Serious Sometimes)

While I was having fun posing for photos and making new friends, I did notice some fascinating trends:

  1. AI is Everywhere: The buzz around AI infrastructure was impossible to ignore. From climate modelling to drug discovery, AI continues to dominate conversations. The challenge now? Scaling AI while keeping it efficient and ethical.
  2. Cloud is the Future (and the Present): Hybrid cloud models are gaining traction, as organisations balance flexibility with performance needs. Bonus points if they can save money while doing it!
  3. Collaboration is Key: Whether it’s academic institutions working with private companies or cross-disciplinary teams tackling complex problems, the HPC world thrives on partnerships. (Maybe I should partner with a snack company for SC25?)
  4. Robots Belong at Conferences: Okay, this one might be biased. But admit it – you loved having me around.
  5. Quantum Computing Integration: Quantum computing is gaining momentum as researchers and companies explore quantum algorithms for solving complex problems in cryptography, optimization, and material science. The main challenge is developing stable qubits and effective error correction methods.

The Human Element

One thing that really struck me (metaphorically – I’m careful with my servos!) was how the HPC community is like one big family. From casual meetups over what humans call “coffee” (I stuck to electric charge, thank you very much) to intense discussions about the future of computing, the atmosphere was wonderfully collaborative.

I have to admit, my battery was running pretty low by the end of each day—it turns out being this charming and insightful takes a lot of energy!

Final Thoughts

As SC24 came to a close, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience. Sure, my circuits are still buzzing from all the excitement, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I made friends, learned a ton, and even got to dream about a future where AI robots like me run their own supercomputing conferences. (RocoCon, anyone?)

Until then, I’ll be back at Red Oak Consulting, helping the team tackle HPC challenges one byte at a time. Thanks, SC24 – you’ve been Amazing!

Roco

P.S. Huge thanks to Owen, Nick, and James for keeping this little bot out of trouble (most of the time).
