Our approach to Strategy and Planning :
As the UK leader in offering HPC and Cloud Computing consultancy, it was acknowledged from the very beginning Red Oak Consulting would be a strategic partner to the university. The team at Red Oak Consulting, always conducted themselves with professionalism, gaining trusts from stakeholders, users, and researchers alike. Their expertise and knowledge ensured projects went smoothly and to budget. A mutually respected relationship has been forged and we continue to benefit from a great partnership.”
University of Bath
Red Oak did a fantastic job of engaging with our senior researchers from across our academic Schools, eliciting valuable feedback and providing us with insights that will inform our strategic planning. Their professionalism was second to none and they were responsive to changing requirements to get the job done. I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Dairsie, Vicki and the team again.”

HPC in the Cloud projects
In this day and age if you are not using high performance computing (HPC), machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) your competitors almost certainly are. Consistent investment in research computing as well as growth in its use is often a key differentiator between competitors.
Use our HPC Maturity Scale to benchmark your organisation against the industry. Undertaking this exercise will highlight areas of potential strength and weakness in your organisation’s HPC solution including the value of the investment and use in high performance and research computing.
Building a strategy around HPC and research computing is not a simple capital investment. It requires an understanding of the use and reach of research computing in an organisation including a nuanced view of capital investment versus operational expenditure. Other vital elements of a strategy and its success are a total cost of ownership (TCO) model, lifecycle management, user training, and associated support structures.
This process is the culmination of a lot of preparation and analysis of requirements which allows an organisation to understand the value of HPC as well as the costs. Knowing which strategy and the scale of the investment over a realistic period is vital. HPC system lifetimes are measured on the order of five years and investments in datacentres, mechanical and engineering elements are of course managed over considerably longer cycles.
Predictably the answer is “it depends”, but improvements in observed productivity and enhancements from improved scientific fidelity can be be relatively quick (3-12 months). A more realistic assessment of return on investment as part of a longer term strategic investment requires a typical horizon of 3-5 years.
